WHAT IS BIBLICAL COUNSELING?
Biblical counseling is a practical means of caring for people through God’s Word by the Holy Spirit’s power. We endeavor to help counselees understand the heart, godly repentance and change, and to bring God’s care and comfort to the hurting. We believe that the one who made us knows more about us than we know about ourselves. We therefore insist on thinking through the ordinary struggles of man (1 Cor 10:13) through a Christian worldview in order to provide hope and help through God’s provision for us in Jesus Christ.
DO BIBLICAL COUNSELORS ONLY BELIEVE IN USING THE BIBLE IN COUNSELING?
If we’re speaking authoritatively to you, then yes, that will only come from God’s Word. The Bible is God’s revelation of himself ultimately through the person of Jesus Christ. Therefore, it is our authority and our source of hope. Biblical counselors believe God when he says he has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of his Son, Jesus, the Word of God made flesh (2 Pet 1:3). We believe that all of Scripture is about Jesus and therefore, is a sufficient word from our Maker to understand ourselves spiritually and the excellent source of counsel.
DOES BIBLICAL COUNSELING BELIEVE MY PROBLEM COULD BE PHYSICAL?
The biblical teaching of man is described best as body and soul – a dichotomy. Man is a spiritually dead image bearer with a rebellious heart and afflicted body. Both heart and body need the resurrection and restoration that only God can provide through Christ’s sacrifice and the Holy Spirit’s power. While medical professionals pursue healing of the body, biblical counselors desire to pursue the heart: the cognition, affection and volition.
We aren’t doctors, so we defer to medical doctors and practitioners for diagnostics on physical issues. We encourage counselees to pursue help from medical doctors for physical examinations, while still encouraging that Jesus is our only hope in this life and the next.
DOES BIBLICAL COUNSELING CARE ABOUT MY PAST?
Biblical counseling utilizes the full counsel of God for practical, wide ranging and specific life issues. We listen before we speak, which means we always unpack the past. After all, we believe God ordained your past! So we are interested in hearing about how it has shaped and affected you and there for informs your perceptions of the present and prospects of your future. We do not however, believe the past is determinative. We believe the redemptive power of God is stronger than the damage of your past.
CAN I GET BIBLICAL COUNSELING IF I’M NOT A CHRISTIAN?
You are welcome to receive counseling if you are not a Christian, but please understand that the gospel is the starting point of real change and Jesus is your only refuge. Surface level change can be expected by following the teachings of the Bible, but real, true, lasting and eternal change is found only through faith in Jesus Christ. The help we offer is only the help of Christ and we depend on the Holy Spirit’s power to bring about saving faith through the gospel of Jesus before we can trust his guarantee of sanctification in your life.
WHO ARE THE COUNSELORS OF THE COUNSELING COLLECTIVE?
The Counseling Collective is made up of qualified men and women who have years of biblical counseling experience and are particularly qualified for the task of counseling. They have been carefully considered and have ongoing peer supervision.
CAN I REQUEST A PARTICULAR COUNSELOR?
Sure. You may request a certain counselor, but please know that our counselors are pastors and ministry leaders who have very limited time.
ARE MY COUNSELING SESSIONS CONFIDENTIAL?
Informed consent to share your information is honored except in the matters of legal or biblical mandate. In these cases, you will be made aware of our obligation to submit to greater authority that God has placed over us information will only be shared with the proper authorities.
I NEED COUNSELING, BUT I CAN’T AFFORD IT. DO YOU HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS?
Our hope is to one day have a counseling scholarship fund where those in need may ask for financial assistance. We also highly recommend you allow your church to participate in this care for you through financial assistance when needed.
While your church may not have a biblical counselor on staff, they can care for their members by providing financial assistance to the member getting counseling. Please contact us for a form request to give your church.
Virtual discipleship groups are also a cost effective option. While this is different than individual counseling, you may learn similar things and have your already existing community help you apply what you learn.
DOES MY CHURCH NEED TO KNOW I’M GETTING COUNSELING?
Ideally, yes. But we know this will not always be the case. We believe that the local church serves as God’s means of provision for believers and that sanctification is a community project. If you are requesting counseling without a church home, part of the counseling process for you will be finding a local church community to begin attending and serving. If you don’t desire for your church leadership to know you are in counseling, this will be a primary discussion between you and your counselor. The counselor will help you navigate with wisdom how to communicate with your church.
